Tips For People New To Anime

For those of you, who are just entering into the long road of being a forever otaku, this guide is for you! Don’t worry, you don’t have to be an otaku to love anime. Although I must warn you, after watching a few series you may suffer from; excessively watching anime, spending your last dime on merchandise, constantly singing Op songs, extreme convention fever (always attending anime/gaming convention), excessively reading manga, shouting at manga characters, saying “I ship this”, possibly even fangirling/fanboying and so forth. This may all sound really crazy but this basically what I deal with almost 95% of the time. If you do start to suffer from these symptoms just embrace them and enjoy the perks of becoming a otaku…(for the rest of your life, muahahaha).

Tip 1: The question you should be asking yourself is, what is my favorite genre?
You can find the answer to this question by recalling all of your favorite movies, TV shows and books that you watched/read recently. Do you watch a lot of chick-flicks? If so, maybe you should consider watching a anime with loads of romance scenes. Do you like TV shows that make you laugh? If so, maybe you should watch a anime that has lots of comedy. Maybe you like action, fantasy or science fiction. I could go on and on but I think you get the picture.

Tip 2: Choosing an anime to watch
There are so many different series to choose from but here are a few recommendations just to get you started.

Romance:

Kimi ni Todoke
This series is started in 2009 and end in 2011. The anime has two seasons with a total of 38 episodes. The series revolves around the love life of Sawako, an sweet but unpopular girl in school. Sawako has a crush on one of the school’s popular boys, Kazehaya. As the series progresses, the two of them become great friends and Kazehaya starts to develop feeling for Sawako.

Sports:

Big Windup!
This story a young boy named Rei Mihashi and his love for baseball. Mihashi isn’t the best player on his team, so he loses confidence in himself. Mihashi leaves his old team and joins Nishiura High. There he meets the team’s catcher, Takaya Abe. Throughout the series, Takaya helps Mihashi find his love for baseball again. This series has two seasons, with a total of 39 episodes.

Comedy:

Wagnaria!!
Sota is the new employee at the family restaurant Wagnaria. On his first day at work he realizes that his co-workers are strange. Popura is cute but is extremely clumsy. Mahiru is terrified of men and hits Sota whenever she is around him. Kyoko is their lazy manager, who only sits around and eats parfaits. Jun is the mature chef that also takes pleasure in making fun of Popura. Otoo is the head of the restaurant and spends most of his time looking for his missing wife. With so many odd characters, there is never a dull moment at Wagnaria. The series was released in 2010 and has a total of 26 episodes.

Action:

Attack on Titan
There are so many action series to watch but this is one of my favorites. It was ranked Top 10 of 2013. There are lots of scenes with blood and body parts flying everywhere. (Warning: This may be too much for PG only viewers too handle) There are giant Titans going around eating people, basically. The protagonist, Eren Yeager, decides to join the military after watching one of the Titans takes his mother’s life. He devotes his life to killing all of Titans and restoring peace back to humanity.

Tip 3: Try to watch all of the first episode of the series
You will never know if you like a anime unless you watch the whole episode. Sometimes the first five minutes won’t grab your attention, I get that, but don’t stop the episode. I usually can determine whether I am interested in a anime after watching the first episode. If you’ve watched the first episode and it still doesn’t interest you, maybe you should look for another series. Reading reviews before watching a series can be helpful too.
